FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT SORT OF INJURIES DO YOU TREAT?

I primarily treat hand and wrist injuries.  Some of the more common injuries that I see are clients with arthritis, tendonitis, wrist and finger fractures, dislocations, tendon or nerve injuries, burns and/or generalized stiffness.  I also assist clients with dominance re-training and hand-writing, fine motor improvement, strengthening and sensory re-education. I can talk to you about assistive devices and provide a wide variety of custom designed splints.

CAN YOU TELL ME A BIT ABOUT SPLINTS?

Splints are custom made braces that are formed with heat to fit your hand.  Splints are often used to support injured structures to help them rest and heal.  The cost of splints varies with the amount of material used.  Most insurance companies will cover the cost of splints but you may require a prescription from your doctor.  On occasion, we can find a pre-fabricated or splint from a box that will suit your specific needs.

HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL I NEED?

The number of sessions will depend on the nature of your injury.  Generally, I do not see clients more than once a week.  I strive to empower you with an effective home program so you can achieve results between sessions.  You are your own best co-therapist.  I am here to equip you with the knowledge and skills to reach your goals.

HOW DOES PAYMENT WORK AND ARE YOU COVERED BY MY INSURANCE PLAN?

Therapy is based on a fee for service hourly rate.  Many insurance companies cover Occupational Therapy as well as splints but you will need to check the specific coverage you have with your  provider. I do not directly bill insurance companies or WSIB.  Payment can be made by cheque, cash or e-transfer.  Receipts are provided.

WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED AND CAN YOU PROVIDE THERAPY AT MY HOME?

I am located in Aurora.  The fee schedule is based on treatment at this location.  If you prefer to have therapy in your home, a travel surcharge can be applied so that you do not need to travel. This is an important option for those with mobility issues or other circumstances that make travel difficult. I can also provide virtual visits depending on your condition.  Call me and we can discuss your options.

WHAT IS A CHT AND HOW CAN I START WORKING WITH YOU?

A CHT is a Certified Hand Therapist or an OT or PT by profession with at least 4,000 hours of hand and upper extremity therapy practice. A CHT must pass a certification examination that demonstrates knowledge in all areas of hand and upper extremity therapy.  To discuss working with me scroll down to the Contact section.

TESTIMONIALS

What former clients have to say about Laura

"Thank you for taking such great care of me.  You were my encourager when progress seemed to be going so slowly.  I know you love your job and do it so well, but for all your clients it goes far beyond that. You make it possible for so many people to return to productive lives again."
Valerie

"Without Laura's knowledge, support, kindness and patience I don't think I would be as far in my recovery.  There were many times when I would feel so depressed and she gave me the encouragement to keep going.  She is incredibly knowledgeable and gentle.  Our community is very blessed to have her."
Kathryn W.

"Laura... I would like to express my sincerest thanks for your wonderful care and treatment.  The stretching maneuvers you taught me worked wonders to gradually restore the function of my hand. Once again, thank you for being such a dedicated and kindhearted care provider".
